ESG interior design

The significance of ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) principles within the realm of interior design

ESG refers to the three factors that measure the sustainability and ethical impact of an investment: Environmental, Social, and Governance.

Environmental factors include a company's impact on the environment, such as its carbon footprint, water usage, and waste production.

Social factors refer to a company's impact on society, including its treatment of employees, community relations, and customer satisfaction.

Governance factors refer to a company's management and leadership, including its transparency, accountability, and business ethics.

ESG criteria are increasingly used by investors to evaluate the long-term sustainability and ethical impact of companies, as they recognise the potential impact of environmental, social, and governance risks on a company's financial performance.

Why is ESG so important?

ESG considerations are important in interior design for several reasons. Firstly, interior design has a significant impact on the environment, with materials, furniture, and lighting choices affecting the energy usage, waste production, and carbon footprint of a space. By considering the environmental impact of design choices, designers can reduce the negative impact on the environment.

Secondly, ESG interiors can impact the well-being of the occupants of a space, which is a key social factor of ESG. Good interior design can enhance the comfort, health, and productivity of people who use the space. Designers can create spaces that promote mental and physical health, enhance social interaction, and create a sense of community.

Finally, the governance aspect of ESG is important in interior design as it pertains to the ethical and responsible conduct of design professionals. This includes adherence to professional codes of conduct, responsible sourcing of materials, and ethical business practices.

Considering ESG factors in interior design is crucial for creating sustainable, responsible, and healthy spaces that promote well-being and minimise the negative impact on the environment.

Our Approach to ESG in Interior Design

Our team are working on a more sustainable approach to our BTR schemes, keen to show investors, developers and financial institutions how design can be sustainable; a solution to strengthening their ESG credentials at such a critical time.

Sustainability is a constantly evolving journey, and alongside our B Corp and ISO14001 environmental certifications, we are now setting out our pathway to achieving Net Zero carbon emissions. We are prioritising our own impacts - our energy consumption, transport, logistics, and resource use - but increasingly will be working with our partners and suppliers to reduce the full life cycle emissions of all our products and services. We have commenced a comprehensive carbon audit of our operations, which we expect to complete by summer 2023. And this will lead to a detailed Carbon Reduction Strategy and a committed Net Zero roadmap and timetable. With the growing threat of global warming, there are few more important aims, and one that we will all need to be part of, as we pursue our ambition of leading sustainability in the British interior design industry.

At AGC BTR, we love to keep on top of the latest design trends in BTR developments, and our futuristic approach means that we are always ahead of the curve.
